Approval secured for 400 homes in Brandon
A housing development in a County Durham village has been approved, paving the way for hundreds of new homes.
Barratt Homes North East will deliver up to 400 properties on land at Red Barns in Brandon, following approval from Durham County Council.
The first phase includes detailed consent for 140 dwellings, with a mix of two-bedroom bungalows and two to five-bedroom houses to suit a range of buyers.
The scheme will also feature affordable housing and a local centre with around 4000sq ft of retail space planned for the second phase.
Further proposals include landscaped areas, new boundary fencing and a mini-mobility hub to improve community connectivity.
Construction on the first phase is expected to begin in February 2026, with the first residents moving in by September the same year.
North East planning consultancy Hedley Planning secured the approval, with director Joe Ridgeon saying the project would inject around £11 million into the local economy and provide a “much-needed” boost to local housing stock to meet the chronic property shortage in the North of England.
He said: “Planning approval is welcome news, heralding high-quality homes and facilities in this part of County Durham.
“It will support job creation, the local supply chain and deliver a development that people can be proud of and look forward to creating a new community.
“This is a positive step for the area and we now look forward to seeing the development come to fruition.”
