Holiday firm makes great escapes to growth

A North East holiday accommodation company has seen rapid growth in its first year, supported by regional business funding and advice.

North East Escapes, founded by Steven Mitchinson in June 2024, began with 13 managed properties and now oversees more than 70 across the region. 

The company has sold over £2 million worth of holidays and continues to expand its team and partnerships with local service providers.

With offices in Ellingham and Tynemouth, North East Escapes combines technology-led property management with a focus on personal service. 

Steven said: “Having spent many years working at a senior level in the industry, I could see that the big national agencies had lost touch with what owners really want, local, personal, responsive service. 

“That’s what North East Escapes was founded to deliver.

“Setting up a business without cutting corners is expensive. 

“The grant enabled us to invest properly from day one, particularly in advertising to reach new property owners. 

“It has allowed us to create a scalable business without compromising on quality.”

The company received start-up support from the Northumberland Small Business Service (NSBS), delivered by Northumberland County Council and funded by the North East Combined Authority and the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

The grant helped the business establish solid foundations and achieve a fivefold increase in its portfolio within 12 months. 

North East Escapes now plans to recruit further staff as it works towards becoming the region’s leading holiday accommodation provider.
