Northumbrian Water helps support energy efficiency at Higher Ground Allendale
A Northumbrian Water project to protect the environment is supporting Higher Ground Allendale to help make their community centre more energy efficient.
Higher Ground Allendale is a local organisation dedicated to improving mental health and wellbeing through gardening, environmental engagement, skill-building, and teamwork. Their centre in Allendale offers a welcoming space for regular coffee mornings, music events, and other community activities.
The donation will fund the installation of secondary glazing at the centre, helping to reduce energy costs by keeping the building warmer in winter. The glazing can also be removed during warmer months to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
This contribution is part of Northumbrian Water’s wider commitment to supporting the communities it serves. The funding has come from the team behind a recent £5.3 million investment to upgrade the rural sewage treatment works in Allendale, enhancing water quality in the River East Allen and surrounding watercourses, while improving the resilience and efficiency of local wastewater services.
Jonny Shaw, Project Manager at Northumbrian Water, said:
"We’re proud to support Higher Ground Allendale and the incredible work they do for the community. By helping improve the energy efficiency of their centre, we’re not only supporting their sustainability goals but also contributing to a space that brings people together and promotes wellbeing."
Over the past decade, Higher Ground Allendale has made a significant impact on the local community. They are now expanding their support by helping volunteers transition into careers, particularly within the gardening and horticulture sectors.
Jane Coulson, Project Manager at Higher Ground Allendale, added:
"This donation means a great deal to us. It will help make our centre more comfortable and cost-effective to run, allowing us to focus on what matters most, supporting people’s mental health and helping them grow through connection with nature and community."
