Development plan unveiled for High Shincliffe

A proposed residential development in a village near Durham City is set to go on display at two community exhibitions later this month.

Banks Homes has revealed early-stage plans for up to 80 new energy-efficient homes on land at the south eastern edge of High Shincliffe.

The Whitwell Acres scheme would include a mix of family houses and bungalows, with 35 per cent of the properties designated as affordable housing.

Designed with sustainability in mind, all homes would feature air source heat pumps and electric vehicle charging points, while a sustainable drainage pond would help manage surface water and create new wildlife habitats.

The plans also propose a biodiversity net gain of at least ten per cent and financial contributions to local healthcare and education.

Public exhibitions will be held at St Mary The Virgin Church Hall in Shincliffe on November 25 and Bowburn Community Centre on December 3, where residents can view proposals and share feedback ahead of a formal planning submission in the new year.

Kate Culverhouse, community relations manager at the Banks Group, said: “The proposed Whitwell Acres development will see up to 80 sustainable, contemporary new homes being delivered, which would give more local people and families a greater opportunity to stay in the area.

“This site has excellent public and sustainable transport links with both Durham City and the surrounding countryside, while it is also close to essential services in High Shincliffe and Bowburn, and we’re confident that there will be strong demand for the new homes we’re looking to build.

“Consultation with local people is always essential in helping us finalise our project designs and ensuring we can share information directly with them on the substantial economic, social and environmental benefits that our residential developments deliver.

“We’re excited to share our outline proposals with the local community and hope to welcome as many people as possible to our two events.”
