Homes of hope take shape in Spennymoor
A new housing development is underway in County Durham to help vulnerable residents rebuild their lives.
Durham County Council has begun construction on eight new homes at Merrington View in Spennymoor, built using high-quality modular units manufactured by Murton-based modular housing specialist Corehaus.
The project, which is part-funded by Homes England through the Government’s Single Homelessness Accommodation Programme (SHAP), forms part of the council’s wider ambition to deliver 500 new homes by 2029 under its Council House Delivery Programme.
Sixteen prefabricated modules have now been transported to the site, where they will be assembled using modern methods of construction (MMC) – an approach that reduces build time, minimises disruption and cuts environmental impact.
Officials say the development will provide individual dwellings for people experiencing homelessness, including ex-service personnel and those fleeing domestic abuse.
Each resident will receive 24-hour on-site support from local charity Emmaus North East, helping them rebuild their lives in a safe and supportive environment.
Councillor Joe Quinn, Durham County Council cabinet member for planning, investments and assets, said: “This development is a carefully managed initiative that will go a long way to providing a secure and supportive setting for people who are in need of a helping hand.
“Not only does it reflect our commitment to safety, dignity, and responsible community investment, but it is also a key part of our wider Council House Delivery Programme.
“We understand there can sometimes be concerns about developments like these, but we want to reassure residents that the scheme is carefully managed and will make a real difference to people’s lives.
“This is about offering people a fresh start in a supportive environment, while also investing in our communities.”
