North East PR leader honoured in London
A North East communications professional has been recognised for his long-standing contribution to charity and community work.
Richard Salkeld, a former ITV Tyne Tees journalist who is now head of communications and partnerships at Newcastle-headquartered train operator Lumo, has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London.
The honour was formally presented at a ceremony held at the historic Guildhall and conducted by Tiphaine Le Bian, deputy clerk to the chamberlain, alongside Jason Groves from the Company of Communicators.
The presentation acknowledged Richard’s extensive volunteer work with regional organisations, including the Royal Television Society (RTS), where he supports young people pursuing careers in media and the creative industries.
His commitment to helping emerging talent enter the sector has become a hallmark of his charitable involvement across the North East.
Originally from Consett and now living in Durham, Richard began his career at ITV Tyne Tees, where he worked in a combination of on-screen and production roles.
After six years in journalism, he moved into PR and communications positions with operators on the East Coast Main Line and Great Western Railway before joining Lumo.
In his current role, he has helped generate significant social value for regional charities and community groups, contributing to Lumo being shortlisted for more than 15 awards linked to partnerships and social impact.
Richard said: “To be given the Freedom of the City of London is a moment of real pride, especially as a communicator from the North East of England.
“For generations, Newcastle’s connection with London was largely defined by coal heading to the capital; today, I’m proud to help champion a much greener, cleaner and more modern link between the two cities, reflecting the dynamic cultural offer that defines Newcastle and the wider region.”
“From reporting in County Durham during my years at ITV Tyne Tees to supporting charities and celebrating communities across the North East and beyond, I’ve always believed in the power of meaningful storytelling.
“This honour reflects the people and organisations I’ve had the privilege to serve, support and continue to champion along the way.”
The Freedom of the City of London, which dates back to 1237, is one of the capital’s oldest civic honours and is shared by figures including Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Lenny Henry and Rachel Riley.
The accolade follows Richard’s earlier recognition with the Hero of Derwentside Medal in 2008 for his reporting on success stories from Consett following the closure of the steelworks.
Approaching his 40th birthday, Richard continues to champion the North East on the national stage through both his professional work and his ongoing voluntary commitments.
Raoul Dixon, chief photographer at Newcastle based press agency North News & Pictures, has worked alongside Richard for many years.
He added: “No-one deserves this accolade more than Richard.
“He constantly strives to promote the region he is so passionate about and he is a proud advocate for the North East on the national stage.
“I have worked with Richard in lots of different capacities and the enthusiasm he has for the numerous projects he’s involved is infectious.
“It's always a joy and privilege to collaborate with him.”
