Wave makes a splash with new acquisition
A utilities company is set to expand its innovation capabilities following a takeover.
Durham-headquartered water retailer Wave has acquired the assets, IP and patents of Cambridge technology firm Infersens, strengthening its position in the non-household water market.
The deal follows a two-year collaboration between the two organisations, funded through the Market Improvement Fund, which has supported the rollout of 1000 remote flow and temperature sensors across a range of customer sites.
Infersens’ flagship technology, Cortense®, a wireless system that monitors water flow and temperature in real time, will now be integrated into Wave’s services.
Early trials have shown the potential to reduce water waste and support compliance with Legionella regulations, with sensors currently used in universities, hotels, government buildings and commercial real estate.
The technology is also helping organisations curb unnecessary flushing and manual checks, which together account for a significant share of water consumption across the non-household sector.
Bosses say Wave plans to continue supporting Infersens’ existing customer base while expanding the rollout of the technology through its commercial and public sector partnerships.
They add the deal marks a major step in the Wave’s ambition to lead on smart water management and sustainability.
Lucy Darch, chief executive at Wave, said: “Infersens has developed truly transformative technology that aligns perfectly with our mission to help businesses use water more efficiently and safely.
“By bringing its assets and expertise into Wave, we’re accelerating our ability to offer smart, scalable solutions to our customers.”
The acquisition comes following the Durham-headquartered retailer becoming the first company to be crowned ‘Water Retailer of the Year’ for the third time at the prestigious 2025 Water Industry Awards in Birmingham.
