LDC completes exit from Shaken Udder

A premium milkshake brand is entering a new chapter after a successful growth period supported by private equity investment.

Shaken Udder has been acquired by family-owned Spanish food company Idilia following LDC’s exit from a four-year partnership that helped the Essex-based brand expand rapidly across retail and convenience channels.

LDC, the private equity firm within Lloyds Banking Group, first backed the business in 2021 to support new product development, broaden distribution and strengthen the management team.

Founded in 2004, Shaken Udder began selling premium milkshakes at festivals before moving into major supermarkets including Waitrose, Sainsburys, Tesco, Co-Op and Asda.

During LDC’s investment, the company increased revenue by 91 per cent, grew headcount by 66 per cent and achieved 23.5 per cent compound annual growth.

It also expanded distribution by 80 per cent, launched ambient products for convenience retailers and introduced an award-winning range of protein milkshakes.

LDC’s Value Creation Partners (VCP) team supported supply chain diversification, marketing strategy, pricing analysis and operational improvements across ESG, cyber security and data protection.

The private equity firm’s exit adds to its track record in scaling consumer brands, with current investments including Bramble Foods and Bespoke Kitchen Foods.

Jodie Howie, founder of Shaken Udder, said: LDC’s backing has supported us in professionalising the business, securing our supply chain and aided us in attracting some top talent.

“We’ve come a long way together, and we’re proud of what the business has achieved.”

Simon Peacock, investment director at LDC, added: “Shaken Udder has truly shaken up its market through a highly effective retail strategy and a relentless focus on product innovation, all while maintaining the focus on quality and flavour that first made it a hit on festival grounds.

“Our relationship, including the involvement of our VCP team, has been a great example of the full breadth of capabilities and support that we offer management teams, and the results that true partnerships can deliver.

“We wish Jodie, Andrew and the team all the best for the next phase of their journey.”
