Contractor boosted by historic dam work
A building contractor has strengthened its order book with £1.3 million dam repair work.
Esh Construction is restoring Sheffield’s Abbeydale Dam.
Bosses say the project will address “significant” leaks on the 18th century structure and “safeguard its integrity”.
Work will include rebuilding and repointing displaced stone walls, installing clay linings and waterproof membranes, and grouting of voids.
A forge building will also be underpinned.
Work is expected to be completed by next summer.
Michael Sherrard, construction manager at Bowburn-headquartered Esh Construction – which is working with Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Museums Trust on the project – said: “Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a unique and historically significant site.
“We are proud to bring our expertise in heritage restoration to ensure this landmark remains safe and operational for generations to come.”
He added all work will be carried out under consent from Historic England and Environment Agency permits.
Councillor Ben Miskell, chair of Sheffield City Council’s transport, regeneration and climate policy committee, said: “Safeguarding Abbeydale Dam is vital to preserving one of Sheffield’s most significant heritage assets.
“This repair programme tackles long-standing structural challenges and provides the stability needed for the future.”
Kim Streets, Sheffield Museums’ chief executive, added: “The Hamlet celebrates Sheffield’s reputation as an influential centre for the development of metallurgy and metal working industries.
“We can’t wait to have the waterwheels turning again once the work is complete.”
