Leeds to become UK’s first City of Maths
A new cultural programme is set to reshape how a city thinks about learning, creativity and everyday problem-solving.
Leeds will launch the country’s first-ever City of Maths in January 2026, kicking off a two-year celebration designed to make maths fun, accessible and inspiring for people of all ages.
The programme will run throughout 2026 and 2027, transforming the city into a hub of puzzles, patterns and hands-on discovery.
Supported by partners including Asda, Leeds Rhinos Foundation and broadcaster Johnny Ball, the City of Maths will deliver events, school projects and playful public activities ranging from mathematical buskers and supermarket pop-ups to puzzles on beer mats, light installations and sporting collaborations.
Officials say the key ambition is to boost confidence and curiosity around maths, particularly in schools, where departments will be offered grants, resources and access to a bespoke “TaskMathster” challenge inspired by Taskmaster.
The initiative will also create the UK’s first Mathematical Playground in a Leeds park – a permanent interactive space designed to help families explore mathematical ideas through play for generations to come.
Ella Wild, project manager for City of Maths, said: “Maths isn’t just for ‘maths people’ – it’s for curious people.
“Leeds is leading a national movement to celebrate maths as something joyful, creative, and deeply human.
“We’re ready to show the people of Leeds a different side to maths - one that everyone can connect with.”
Dr Katie Chicot, chief executive of MathsWorldUK – the maths charity leading on delivery of the City of Maths programme – added: “Leeds has always been a city of innovation, imagination and collaboration.
“We’re thrilled that Leeds will be the trailblazer for City of Maths.
“With our partners, community and schools, we aim to show that mathematics belongs to everyone and it’s not just useful – it’s exciting, empowering, and a vital part of who we are.
“When people feel good about maths, they can do anything.
“Our hope is that, after seeing what’s possible here, other UK cities will want to step forward and host their own City of Maths.”
