Bursaries back Teesside talent

A North East education initiative is helping local students progress in their studies.

Three Teesside University students have received financial support through new bursaries awarded by UKSE, the business-support arm of Tata Steel.

The funding forms part of UKSE’s 50th anniversary celebrations, with the organisation choosing to mark the milestone by investing in future regional talent.

Each bursary provides £1000 to help high-achieving students with study-related costs, from equipment to travel, while supporting the skills pipeline needed by employers across the Tees Valley.

This year’s recipients are George Winspear, studying MEng (Hons) civil engineering; Hami Ahsan, BEng (Hons) chemical engineering; and Harry Passman, BEng (Hons) instrumental and control engineering, all currently in their second year.

Harry said: “This bursary will be a great help as I start the next stages of my course which I am really enjoying.

“I hope my career path will enable me to contribute to the success of Teesside industry in the future.

“The bursary will help me purchase course material and software as well as contribute to vital travelling costs and I am very grateful to UKSE.”

UKSE regional manager Sarah Thorpe added: “UKSE has supported thousands of businesses in the past 50 years with finance and workspace to help them grow and create jobs.

“Our Community Support Fund backs a wide range of projects for people of all ages and needs in our steel communities.

“We recognise that businesses need the vital skills that Teesside University and others are helping to provide and are delighted to be able to offer these bursaries for such promising students.”

Helen Jamison, development officer at Teesside University, which was recently named University of the Year at The Times Higher Education awards, added: “We are very grateful for UKSE’s generous support.

“A financial boost like this can have a real impact on students and their studies.”
