SMI Prepares for 10th Anniversary Women in Defence Awards
· Handing Over the Gauntlet for Most Improved Charter Signatory
As the 10th Anniversary Women in Defence Awards approaches, Scientific Management International (SMI) reflects on the impact of winning last year’s “Most Improved Charter Signatory”.
For SMI, a specialist SME delivering mission-critical connectivity in demanding environments, the award became a catalyst for visibility, engagement, and transformation. SMI gained new platforms and audiences following the win. Highlights included a visit from the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Ben Key, endorsing SMI’s role in maritime defence, as well as speaking engagements at DSEI 2025 and Ocean Business, where SMI championed small and medium enterprises (SMEs) for their innovation and inclusion.
Jenny Shaw, CEO of SMI, said: “We’ve embedded the Women in Defence Charter into our operations, strengthening development pathways, expanding mentoring, and deepening inclusive recruitment. Our leadership team champions diversity at every level.”
SMI’s progress includes both appointing its first female financial director, achieving a 50/50 gender-balanced Board, and welcoming its first female engineering apprentice. Over the course of the year, SMI has also launched a spotlight series on women in engineering, showcasing the talent and technical excellence driving success.
As SMI prepares to pass on the “Most Improved Charter Signatory” title, it does so with gratitude and resolve. The company remains committed to inclusion, excellence, and SME leadership across defence.
“Progress is best achieved together,” added Shaw. “We will keep pushing forward with purpose, pride, and partnership.”
