Spencer Group celebrates double award win

A Hull-based construction specialist is celebrating national recognition for its workplace culture.

Spencer Group has been named Best Place to Work – Large Firm at the Construction News Workforce Awards, marking its second major people-focused accolade of the year.

The firm, which delivers multi-disciplinary engineering and construction projects across the UK, was honoured during a ceremony at London’s JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel.

This follows Spencer Group’s earlier success at the New Civil Engineer Awards, where it was also named Best Place to Work – Contractor, reinforcing its reputation as one of the industry’s leading employers.

Judges praised the company for its commitment to employee wellbeing, highlighting initiatives that go beyond standard workplace support, praising its “sophisticated and mature approach to wellbeing” and its clear commitment to building a people-centred workplace where employees feel valued, supported and empowered to progress.

These include Mental Health First Aiders, family-friendly policies, enhanced maternity leave and even “bring your dog to work” days to promote a healthier work-life balance.

Yvonne Moir, HR director at Spencer Group, said: “Spencer Group is committed to being an outstanding employer and we wholeheartedly believe that our people are key to our success.

“We invest in employee wellbeing and progression because we’re passionate about creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

“We’re delighted that our efforts have been recognised in the Construction News Workforce Awards, but, even more importantly, we’re encouraged by our regular staff survey results that show that our people feel listened to, cared for and inspired when they come to work.”

The business also invests heavily in staff training and development, offering structured personal development reviews, a Future Leaders programme and the PRINT® behavioural tool to support individual growth.

Its long-standing partnership with Ron Dearing UTC in Hull further underlines a strong focus on nurturing the next generation of engineering talent.

This latest award takes Spencer Group’s total to seven so far in 2025, adding to recognition from the Bridges Awards, National Building and Construction Awards and the Generation 4 Change Yorkshire and Humber Awards.
