Children help name Redcar seafront attraction

A visitor project in Redcar is moving forward as local schoolchildren have unveiled the name of a new family space being built in the town centre.

The new Redcar High Street development will be called The Lookout, following input from pupils at five primary schools who took part in workshops linked to the Redcar Town Deal.

Inspired by Redcar’s historic Old Lookout on South Terrace – a former fisherman’s vantage point dating back to 1854 – the name reflects a key part of the town’s heritage.

Currently under construction, The Lookout will form a central part of the town’s regeneration plans, providing a family-friendly destination that combines entertainment areas, food and drink, a modern library, digital technology and flexible learning spaces.

Designed as an all-weather hub for residents and visitors, it aims to boost the local economy while creating a welcoming, multi-use venue.

The building will also include an internal street connecting the Esplanade to a new public square, which will host small events, pop-up stalls, workshops and outdoor performances.

Catherine Clennett, chair of the Redcar Town Deal Board, said: “This new family-friendly venue will help transform our high street, attracting more residents and visitors to the town centre.

“It’s a key part of our Town Deal plans to transform Redcar, and we’re thrilled to see it coming to life.”

The project sits within the wider Redcar Town Deal programme, shaped through public consultation and supported by a board of local leaders, industry experts and community representatives.

Councillor Alec Brown, leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, added: “We’d like to thank the local pupils who helped name this attraction.

“They can take pride in knowing they’ve made a lasting mark on their high street.

“This venue will offer something for everyone, rain or shine, drawing more people to our high street, local businesses, and seafront.

“We’re delighted to see this progress.”
