Horden regeneration plans move forward
A County Durham regeneration scheme is moving forward following approval for more than 100 new affordable homes.
Durham County Council has secured planning consent for the latest phase of the Horden Masterplan, a £10.7 million project aimed at revitalising the village’s Numbered Streets.
The plans cover a 2.8-hectare site spanning Third Street, Fifth Street and the former Fourth Street, paving the way for a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses, as well as two-bedroom bungalows.
The new homes will be delivered and managed by the council as part of a hybrid application combining the demolition of existing buildings, full permission for 53 properties and outline approval for up to 52 more.
Funding includes £6.2 million from Durham County Council and £4.5 million from the North East Combined Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund.
Joe Quinn, cabinet member for resources, investment and assets at Durham County Council, said: “The approval of these plans represents an important step forward in efforts to regenerate Horden.
“Once complete, the scheme will offer a choice of high quality, well-designed and much-needed affordable homes for local people, with existing residents of Third and Fifth Street given priority.
“The new housing will also help to tackle issues associated with long-term empty homes and reflects our commitment to building vibrant and resilient communities across County Durham.
“Furthermore, we hope the investment we are making in Horden’s future will attract other investors and result in even more regeneration activities in the East Durham area.”
A rehousing strategy has been created to support affected residents, ensuring suitable alternative accommodation is identified where needed as the masterplan progresses.
