Metrocentre unveils independent retail revival
A North East shopping centre has announced plans to revitalise one of its link malls.
The Metrocentre Partnership has revealed proposals to transform The Forum into The Crescent, a “flagship” village-style mall designed to showcase local brands and offer visitors a more relaxed, character-led experience.
Bosses say the redevelopment will introduce up to ten refurbished units alongside a centrally located artisan coffee hub, forming a calmer, more sociable space between the Blue and Green malls.
They add that the Crescent aims to revive the area’s heritage as a home for specialist independents, creating an attractive and affordable environment for emerging retailers – including those opening their first physical store.
The mall will benefit from Metrocentre’s strong footfall, with 15.8 million visitors annually and dwell times averaging over two hours.
Designs take inspiration from traditional market towns, featuring Victorian-inspired fascias, hand-painted signage and natural finishes, with an artisan coffee hub at the heart of the space.
Landlord columns will be reimagined as ‘trees’, complemented by greenery and warm tones to evoke an outdoor village street.
Ben Cox, director at Sovereign Centros from CBRE, asset managers of Metrocentre, said: “The Crescent is an important part of our strategy to bring fresh energy, upgraded design and a stronger independent retail presence to this link mall, which reflects our ambition to invest in areas of the centre where our customers will see the biggest benefit, creating an additional destination that resonates with shoppers, whilst attracting a diverse mix of occupiers.
“We know our visitors love discovering something new, and The Crescent is designed to offer exactly that – a space filled with character, independent brands and a welcoming feel.”
The project builds on recent investment across the Metrocentre, including new arrivals such as Zara, Stradivarius, H Beauty and the NHS Community Diagnostic Centre.
