Getting to know... Dean Benson
We know you as the founder of Visualsoft and a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick…
I’ve always been driven by building things that make a difference, whether that’s technology, a team, or something physical. I like taking an idea, breaking it down, and turning it into something real. I’m quite private by nature but curious by default. I enjoy learning how things work, improving them, and moving on to the next challenge.
Did you always want to work in your industry?
I’ve worked in tech all my life, literally since the age of seven. My dad introduced me to computers before I could properly read, and he’s the reason I got into it in the first place. He inspired me to explore how things work and to keep pushing what’s possible. I didn’t really have a choice in the best way, it’s all I’ve ever known. Business, drive, success, and technology have always gone hand in hand for me.
What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?
The best part is seeing an idea come to life and knowing it makes a difference for people or businesses. I wouldn’t say there’s a worst bit, the constant pace and challenge of staying ahead is what keeps me interested. If anything, that pressure is what makes it fun.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Building Visualsoft from nothing into a business that helped so many people grow, that’s something I’ll always be proud of. And now, I’m onto challenge number two with Pulse Reviews, working alongside my brilliant business partner Kiya to create something just as meaningful, but in a completely new space.
How do you relax outside of work?
The truth is, tech and work are my life. Even when I’m not officially “working,” I’m usually experimenting with automation or building systems, including inside my own house. I love developing AI-driven, self-healing technology that’s both disruptive and genuinely useful. That’s my version of relaxing.
What makes the North East such a great place to live and work?
It’s the balance. The region’s full of people who are ambitious but grounded, smart but real. There’s a genuine sense of community here, people want you to succeed but will also keep your feet on the ground. It’s a great place to build, think and grow.
Tell us something about you we didn’t know…
I spend more time in dashboards than I probably should, whether that’s for energy, automation, or data. I like seeing everything connect, making systems run smoother, and watching how small improvements can transform the bigger picture.
