Wedding venue hails new era after £2.4 million boost
A wedding venue says it is set for a new life following a £2.4 million refurbishment.
Whitworth Hall has added a 125-guest chapel and function suite and refreshed bedrooms, reception and bar areas.
The work was backed by investment firm Develop North, with bosses saying the upgrades “offer a beautiful and memorable experience for couples and guests”.
Based near Spennymoor, in County Durham, the Grade II-listed country house is owned by The Apartment Group, whose portfolio also includes Newton Hall and Le Petit Chateau, in Northumberland, and Lartington Hall, near Barnard Castle.
Stuart Bailey, The Apartment Group chief executive, said: “Whitworth Hall is a magical place, rich in heritage and full of character.
“With Develop North’s backing, we’ve created something really special.”
The investment follows previous Develop North support for The Apartment Group’s plans to refurbish The Croft Hotel, near Darlington.
Brendan O’Grady, fund manager at Newcastle-based Tier One Capital, which manages Develop North, added: “We’re delighted to support The Apartment Group in delivering another stunning North East wedding venue.
“Whitworth Hall has huge potential, and this investment will enable it to become a premier destination for all-year-round celebrations.”
Since its founding in 2017, officials say London Stock Exchange-listed Develop North has supported more than 40 projects and helped create in excess of 12,000 jobs.
Earlier this year, it unveiled a real estate growth blueprint aimed at expanding financial support for North East businesses, housing and regeneration projects.
Develop North received advice from LSH, Eddisons and Ward Hadaway, while Hay & Kilner acted for The Apartment Group.
