Redcar homes get £6 million upgrade boost

A North East housing provider is investing in the modernisation of homes in Redcar as part of a multi-year improvement programme.

Newcastle-headquartered Karbon Homes has launched a £6 million investment initiative that will see 50 properties in the town upgraded through contractor Straightline NE.

The work includes new kitchens and bathrooms, window and door replacements, full electrical rewires and updated heating systems, helping to improve comfort and energy efficiency for residents.

27 of the homes are at Langley House, a scheme for over-55s in The Lakes area, where flats have already received kitchen refurbishments and upgraded windows and doors.

Communal areas have also been improved with an updated shared kitchen and new fire doors.

Brenda Harland, who moved to Langley House 13 years ago, declared herself ‘very happy’ with the work completed at her home.

She said: “I’m really happy with my new kitchen, and the new windows and doors have made a big difference to the feel of the flat.

“The team were absolutely brilliant from start to finish.

“I couldn’t say a bad word about them.

“When I first heard about the works, the thought of so much disruption was quite daunting, but I was well looked after and the team were willing to do anything to help make the process as easy as possible.”

Kevin Bucas, operations director at Straightline, added: “Receiving comments like Brenda’s is why we do what we do.

“Upon completion, Langley House residents benefitted from multiple phases of work to their home, and the delivery of this work whilst maintaining high customer satisfaction is testament to our liaison and supervision team.

“We walked away proud that Langley House is now thermally efficient with improved aesthetics, and fire safe.”

Further properties in The Lakes area will be modernised from early 2026 as part of the ongoing three-year programme.

Across the wider North East, around 600 Karbon Homes properties will receive upgrades by 2027.

The work forms part of Karbon’s wider £135 million property investment plan, designed to maintain and enhance the quality of its existing homes over the next five years.

Nathan Lowes, investment team manager at Karbon Homes, added: “We’re committed to investing in the quality and efficiency of our homes, delivering proactive programmes of work to ensure our homes are great places for customers, both now and in the future.

“In partnership with Straightline we’re delivering a suite of works to hundreds of homes.

“From both aesthetic improvements to investments in efficiency and safety, we’ve received lots of positive feedback on the works we’ve completed so far, with customers telling us what a difference it’s making.”
