CFS Aero launches world’s first digital test cell

A Warwick-based aerospace business is expanding its capabilities with a landmark investment in advanced testing technology.

CFS Aero has launched the world’s first fully digital aircraft test cell, one of just nine such facilities globally and the only one to offer live remote access and real-time performance data.

The multi-million-pound facility enables customers to monitor test runs online while accessing detailed diagnostics throughout the process.

Developed with support from a £1.5 million loan from Frontier Development Capital, the new test cell allows CFS Aero to introduce a new service line focused on the repair and certification of auxiliary power units, or APUs that are found on aircraft such as the Airbus A220, Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.

These smaller engines play a critical role in starting aircraft engines and supplying onboard electrical power.

The expansion is expected to significantly boost growth, with bosses at CFS Aero forecasting a doubling of its 35-strong workforce over the next four years.

Gareth Sheridan, chief operating officer of CFS Aero, said: “CFS has earned a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and rapid turn-around times.

“The addition of our new APU Test Cell allows us to bring those same values into a new market.

“We’re taking a measured approach to growth – focusing initially on a small group of key customers – so we can ensure every unit that leaves our facility meets the highest standards of performance and customer satisfaction.”

Dianne Watt, investment director at Frontier Development Capital, added: “We have supported CFS Aero from the early days and it has been rewarding to watch it go from strength to strength.

“The launch of the test cell is another important milestone, one that will create many more skilled jobs in the business and its UK supply chain and reaffirm its position as one of the UK’s leading turbine engine specialists.”

Founded in 2012, CFS Aero has steadily built its reputation, having previously maintained engines for the late Queen’s Flight and earning Gold Standard Supplier Recognition from BAE Systems.

The company operates globally, with additional sites in Hawarden Airport, near Chester, and in Los Angeles.
