Approval secured on 169-home scheme

A North Tyneside housing development is moving forward.

Housebuilder Story Homes has secured full planning approval for the first phase of residential development at Killingworth Moor, clearing the way for the delivery of 169 new homes.

Approval has been granted by North Tyneside Council’s Planning Committee, with the site to be known as Killingworth Gate.

Carlisle-headquartered Story Homes acquired the land in July 2024 with existing outline consent already in place.

Following the purchase, the housebuilder submitted a revised layout to refine and enhance the scheme, which required formal committee approval.

The approved plans include a mix of two to five-bedroom homes, designed to meet demand from local families and first-time buyers.

A proportion of the properties will be delivered as affordable housing, helping to widen access to new homes in the area.

The scheme also places a strong emphasis on landscaping, with mature tree planting and green spaces planned to enhance biodiversity and create an attractive setting for residents.

Amanda Stephenson, head of land for Story Homes North East, said: “We are delighted that our plans for the first phase of development at Killingworth Gate have been approved.

“This marks a significant step forward for a site that is strategically important to both Story Homes and North Tyneside.

“The scheme will deliver much-needed homes built to our high standards of design, sustainability and quality, while also providing affordable options and attractive green spaces.

“We look forward to progressing works on site and beginning to bring this exciting new development to life.”

Highway works are already under way, including a new roundabout off the B1317 to serve the first phase.

Further infrastructure improvements, including a new dumbbell roundabout at the A19 interchange, are expected to begin next winter as part of the wider Killingworth Moor masterplan.

The development is supported by a Section 106 agreement, securing £2.8 million in contributions during the first phase towards local infrastructure and services.

Construction at Killingworth Gate is expected to begin in spring 2026.
