Mascot maker suits up for growth
A Cheshire-based costume manufacturer is preparing for expansion after securing funding to strengthen its operational base and protect jobs.
Stockport-headquartered Costumes with Character has completed the purchase of its 5852sq ft office and manufacturing facility after securing a £610,000 funding package from HSBC UK.
Bosses say the move safeguards the future of twenty four employees and positions the company for growth in new UK and international markets.
Alison Dermott, operations director at Costumes with Character, said: “Costumes with Character has always placed people at the heart of its operations, with some staff members having been with us for over 30 years.
“Thanks to the funding provided from HSBC UK, we have been able to secure a dedicated home for our staff and customers.
“This funding has given us the stability to streamline production, promote collaboration internally and we look forward to continuing our investment into our long-term success.
“This is a fantastic milestone to reach, just in time for our 40-year anniversary next year and we thank HSBC UK for their support.”
James Jones, relationship manager at HSBC UK, added: “Supporting Costumes with Character was a natural fit when we saw the long-standing legacy and service that this business has continued to provide over the years. we’re proud to play a part in this pivotal stage of the business’s journey as it expands into new markets.”
Founded in 1986, the firm began life producing a single mascot for UK fire brigades before formally becoming Costumes with Character in 1999.
It has been employee-owned since transitioning to an employee ownership trust in 2019.
Today, the company designs and manufactures licensed and bespoke mascots, puppets, promotional costumes and theatrical wardrobe for organisations across sport, entertainment, charities and leisure.
Its client list includes major household names spanning media, retail, healthcare and football teams, including Manchester United FC and Liverpool FC, along with The FA.
