Builder begins £2 million flood defence project
A housebuilder has kickstarted £2 million flood defence work.
Beal Homes is strengthening protection along a section of the River Hull.
Bosses say the 12-month venture will widen an existing 1.5-kilometre stretch of embankment by three metres, install sustainable drainage systems and add a gravel footpath and cycleway.
The project comes as the Hessle-based, family-owned builder prepares to create the 450-property Kings Crescent estate on the city’s 3500-plus-home Kingswood scheme.
Guy Jewitt, Beal technical director, said: “The works will improve existing flood defences and create a wider and more robust embankment to protect the whole of Kingswood.
“We’re committed to leaving a positive and lasting legacy in all the areas in which we work.”
Beal Homes is working with the Environment Agency on the project.
Matt Smith, Environment Agency asset performance advisor for Hull and the Humber, added: “We have worked closely with Beal Homes from the start of this project to agree a suitable method of construction.
“We’ll also be monitoring the project throughout to ensure these works are delivered in line with requirements.”
