Ambience docks for Tyne refit

A North East shipyard is undertaking a major cruise ship refit after welcoming one of the largest vessels to dock on the River Tyne in over twenty years.

Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambience has entered dry dock at APCL A&P Tyne for a multi-million-pound refit, marking the largest ship to be drydocked on the river in more than twenty years.

The 70,285grt vessel measures 245 metres in length and carries up to 1400 guests.

Over a three-week period, the ship will undergo extensive technical maintenance and refurbishment, including upgrades to its propulsion control system, engine overhauls and replacement of key rudder and emissions components.

Significant steel and structural work will also be carried out across the hull and tank areas, alongside internal pipework, HVAC and mechanical improvements.

David Mc Ginley, chief executive of APCL Group, said: “APCL A&P Tyne is delighted to welcome Ambience to its facility this month.

“The combination of APCL’s strategic locations, technical expertise and project management enables our Group to complete vital maintenance work under tight time schedules – minimising the downtime of Ambassador’s fleet.”

The project follows the recent refit of sister ship Ambition at APCL A&P Falmouth and further strengthens APCL Group’s reputation as a leading UK destination for large-scale cruise ship repair and maintenance.

Nick Hughes, chief operating officer at Ambassador Cruise Line, added: “The Ambience’s dry dock in Hebburn represents a significant investment in our first lady of the sea and underlines our long-term commitment to maintaining the highest technical and hospitality standards across our fleet.

“Working with APCL A&P Tyne allows us to support UK maritime expertise while ensuring Ambience continues to deliver the affordable quality and warmest welcome at sea that our guests value so highly.”
