Getting to know... Sam Gordon

We know you as the founder of Big Purple and a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick…
Behind the title, I’m just someone who’s naturally curious and loves creating things. I get a lot of energy from taking ideas and turning them into something real, especially when it involves working with great people who are truly talented in what they do. What really makes me tick is creating something that hasn’t been done before, the process of getting stuck into the challenges, and finding solutions to get the best possible outcome. I’m very people-driven, which is why being part of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum has been so valuable, it’s all about learning from others and sharing experiences.

Did you always want to work in your industry?
Not at all. I began my career as an electrician, so this industry wasn’t part of the original plan. I’ve always enjoyed practical problem-solving and figuring out how things work, and that mindset naturally led me in new directions over time. As I explored different opportunities, I realised I was drawn to the creative side of business and the challenge of building something from scratch. What started as a change in direction gradually became a real passion, and it’s been an exciting journey ever since.

What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?
The best bit? Definitely the people. I love working with teams who are passionate and creative, and seeing an idea come to life, especially in AV, where you can literally transform a space or an experience. There’s something really satisfying about solving tricky problems and making moments that stick.
The worst bit… probably the unpredictability. Things can change in an instant, a last-minute client request, technical issues, or tight deadlines. It can be stressful, but honestly, it also keeps you on your toes and makes the wins feel even better.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
I’d say my greatest achievement is building a team and a business I’m genuinely proud of. We started with one company and now have five, with clientele from all over the world. Winning the North East Entrepreneur of the Year award was a huge highlight, it felt like recognition not just for me, but for the whole team.

How do you relax outside of work?
I am a Newcastle United season ticket holder so I wouldn’t exactly say it helps me relax but I do enjoy going to the games home and away.

What makes the North East such a great place to live and work?
The North East has a real sense of community and resilience that you don’t find everywhere. People here are hardworking, passionate, and genuinely supportive of each other, whether it’s in business or everyday life.

Tell us something about you we didn’t know…
I’m an avid video gamer, which might surprise some people, but it’s actually been a huge asset professionally. Spending time in gaming communities has given me a genuine understanding of the culture, the audiences, and what really resonates in the esports world. That insight has helped our business build authentic relationships and confidently break into esports, rather than approaching it from the outside. It’s a great example of how personal passions can translate directly into commercial opportunity.
