Saltburn Cliff Tramway gets a fresh lift
A North Yorkshire seaside landmark is undergoing a significant upgrade to protect one of the world’s oldest working transport attractions ahead of the peak tourist season.
The Saltburn Cliff Tramway, also known as Saltburn Cliff Lift, has begun a major refurbishment programme with the removal of its two carriages, which had been in service for more than 15 years and had transported an estimated 2.5 million passengers.
New replacement carriages are being built off-site and will be installed in the coming months, retaining the tramway’s distinctive style while offering improved views for passengers.
The Grade II-listed attraction is believed to be the oldest operating water-balanced funicular in the UK and the second oldest in the world.
Constructed between 1883 and 1884, it replaced an earlier vertical cliff hoist and connects the Victorian town with its historic pier via a steep 120ft incline.
Each carriage operates on a counterbalancing water system, with tanks holding up to 1500 litres, all controlled from the top station.
The latest upgrade will also include a new hydraulic brake and buffer system, alongside general servicing and testing.
The investment follows the tramway’s reopening in September 2024 after extensive fire damage earlier that year.
Originally purchased by the local authority in 1939, the tramway is now operated by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, which continues to oversee its long-term preservation.
Councillor Carrie Richardson, deputy leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and cabinet member for climate and culture, said: “The Tramway is internationally renowned and has brought pleasure and convenience to holidaymakers for more than 140 years.
“It’s incredibly well-used and after great service the carriages have reached the end of their lives and it’s time to install new, better ones.
“Safety always comes first and as well as servicing and testing the whole Tramway, a new brake and buffering system will be installed to ensure it can be enjoyed for many years to come.”
