North East music leader joins BPI equity board
A North East-based music leader has secured a national advisory role supporting efforts to improve fairness and representation across the UK’s creative industries.
Josh Daniel, head of independent record label Interval Records and chief commercial officer at music development agency Generator, has been appointed to the British Phonographic Industry’s (BPI) Equity and Justice Advisory Group (EJAG).
The BPI represents the UK’s record companies and label businesses, with EJAG playing a key role in helping shape the organisation’s work on diversity, equity and inclusion across the sector.
Daniel joins seven new members drawn from across the music industry, selected for their expertise and lived experience.
He said: “I’m very proud to join such a prestigious board and look forward to contributing to its work.
“The appointment is a massive honour for me personally, but it also speaks to the wider work the teams are doing at Generator and Interval Records to widen access and opportunity across the industry.
“We’ve always believed that national and international music businesses and artist careers can be built from anywhere in the UK, and I’m proud to play a role in ensuring that thinking is reflected in national conversations.”
The advisory group is chaired by Yolanda Brown OBE DL, with Alex Hannaby as deputy chair, and is supported by Hailey Willington, the BPI’s head of diversity, equity and inclusion.
EJAG helps the BPI turn its five-year DEI strategy into practical action, while also acting as an independent ‘critical friend’ that challenges the industry to make lasting, inclusive change.
YolanDa, who is set to receive the Freedom of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, added: “On behalf of EJAG, we are delighted to welcome our new members and look forward to being able to draw on their breadth of lived experience and knowledge as we build on our important work advocating for a more diverse, equitable and inclusive industry.
“We owe a huge debt to our EJAG founder members after a near-decade of valued service and commitment, and we thank them for their dedication, wisdom, and all that they have contributed.”
