Hull Kingston Rovers gain expansion plan approval
A rugby league club has secured backing to convert a major expansion plan.
Hull Kingston Rovers has been backed to create a sport and commercial hub around its Craven Park stadium.
Bosses say the blueprint – supported by Hull City Council’s planning committee – will include three training pitches, a padel centre and retailers Aldi, Home Bargains and Costa.
They add the venture will “support the club’s long-term operational needs while contributing to wider regeneration objectives in East Hull”.
Building work is earmarked to begin later this year.
The plans come as the Super League and Challenge Cup champions prepare to lock horns with Australian counterparts Brisbane Broncos in the World Club Challenge.
The Robins are also set to travel to Las Vegas to face Leeds Rhinos in a glitzy season curtain-raiser.
Paul Lakin, Hull Kingston Rovers’ chief executive, said: “This major milestone allows us to press ahead with our ambitious plans, and apply for pots of funding to complete the development of the community side of this project.
“The club has achieved so much on and off the field in recent years, but changing the heart of East Hull for the better will certainly be one of the prouder moments for us all.
“This is a significant part of the jigsaw to ensure we create a legacy from everything happening around our great club at the moment.”
