Armstrong Watson hires training director
Accountancy and advisory firm Armstrong Watson has strengthened its early careers offering with the appointment of Chris Soan as firmwide technical training director, alongside continued growth in its trainee cohort.
Chris joins the firm following 16 years at Newcastle University, most recently as associate dean of education at the university’s business school.
He brings extensive experience across higher education, industry and professional practice, having previously worked as a financial controller, assurance auditor and at Big Four firms PwC and Deloitte.
Chris’ appointment supports Newcastle and Hexham-based Armstrong Watson’s long-standing commitment to developing future talent.
He said: “I am delighted to be joining Armstrong Watson at such an exciting time for the business.
“I find it refreshing that a firm is prepared to invest in a new firmwide role which will continue to help its students enjoy an unrivalled training experience.
“This will help the delivery of exceptional client service as well as to further strengthen our leadership pipeline.”
He added: “My role is to strengthen the firm’s support framework for our students, empowering them on their journey to becoming confident, well-rounded professionals and ensuring they enjoy an exceptional learning experience.”
The firm currently supports 160 trainees working towards qualifications across audit, accounting, tax and payroll, including 89 who joined in 2025.
Recruitment is under way for a further 74 trainees across the North of England and Scotland.
Armstrong Watson has been recognised nationally for its apprenticeship programmes, including repeated inclusion in The Sunday Times Top Apprenticeship Employers and Best Places to Work rankings.
