North East rallies behind Sunday for Sammy
A North East charity event is set to return with strong backing from regional businesses, educators and public bodies supporting the creative sector.
Sunday for Sammy, which raises funds to support performing artists in times of crisis, has secured support from more than 50 businesses and organisations across the region ahead of its latest show.
Donations of goods, services and time are helping to deliver another high-profile fundraising night.
Gateshead College is once again playing a central role, providing students with hands-on experience across a range of creative disciplines while supporting the delivery of the event.
Lisa Crow, CoLab manager at Gateshead College, said: “We’ve had so many fantastic opportunities for our students through Sunday for Sammy.
“They’ve been involved in everything from Sketch for Sammy and merchandise design to planning the VIP area for the show, as well as photography, TV and film projects.
“One of the highlights was welcoming Matty Healy – it was an incredible day.
“We managed to keep it a secret from the students, and when they walked into the theatre and saw him standing front and centre, they were completely blown away.”
Hospitality support is being provided by Maldron Hotel Newcastle, continuing its involvement with arts and culture initiatives in the city.
General Manager Anna Wadcock added: “Sunday for Sammy is an amazing local charity, and I absolutely love how much they do to support the arts across the region.
“If you’re a business in the North East and you’re able to help a charity like this in any way, shape or form, you really should.
“Who doesn’t love going to concerts, films and musicals?
“What Sunday for Sammy does to support young and emerging talent from the North East is just fantastic.”
The event has also received backing from the North East Combined Authority (NECA), highlighting the wider role that creative events play in the region’s cultural and economic landscape.
Lesley Strickland, events and sports lead at NECA, added: “It was really crucial for us to support organisations from the North East.
“And what better way than getting behind a fantastic North East event that brings together so much talent and so many brilliant performers.
“We’re absolutely delighted to be involved and can’t wait for the show to happen on 15 February.”
Together, the support reflects a strong collective commitment to sustaining creative talent across the North East.
Show producer Ray Laidlaw added: “Sunday for Sammy has always been about people pulling together for the greater good.
“The support we receive from businesses, colleges, venues and public bodies makes a massive difference.
“It allows us to put on a top-class show while making sure more of the money raised goes directly to helping artists when they really need it.”
