Kids Go Free returns for half term
North East families will be able to travel for less this February half term as a regionwide free bus scheme returns.
Mayor Kim McGuinness’ Kids Go Free initiative will run from February 14 to March 1, allowing up to three children aged 11 and under to travel free on bus services across County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear when accompanied by a fare-paying adult or concessionary passholder.
The scheme aims to make public transport more affordable during school holidays while encouraging greener journeys.
Last summer, around 360,000 children travelled free under the offer.
The return of the initiative gives families a cost-effective way to reach attractions, shopping centres and relatives during the break.
Councillor Martin Gannon, cabinet member for transport at the North East Combined Authority, said: “Hundreds of thousands of children have already travelled for free using the mayor’s Kids Go Free initiative, and I’m delighted that it’s back for February half term.
“It’s great that local transport operators continue to work closely with the mayor on this important offer, which makes the school holidays that bit more affordable for families in the North East.”
Cathy Massarella, managing director of Nexus, added: “Kids Go Free has been a real success story on Metro, and it’s great to see it extended on the bus again this half term.
“It’s a fantastic offer that makes public transport more affordable for families in our region.”
