Airport eyes cargo take-off after equipment outlay
An aviation hub says cargo services are set to take off thanks to a “significant” investment.
Newcastle International Airport has added new equipment to its freight fleet.
Bosses say the apparatus – which includes a main deck loader – will help expand existing 4000-tonne import and export operations led by a daily Dubai service.
They add the investment, secured alongside on-site business partner Samson Aviation, will allow the base to handle “larger and more specialised cargo” such as heavy machinery, aircraft components and luxury vehicles across a wider range of aircraft.
Leon McQuaid, director of aviation development, said: “We are delighted to further strengthen our position as a leading cargo gateway.
“It significantly enhances our capability to handle a wider range of cargo and underlines our ability to support the growing number of businesses choosing the airport for their import and export needs.”
Paula Ives, Samson Aviation general manager, added: “The investment demonstrates our commitment to supporting the airport’s growing cargo operations.
“It will create more opportunities for businesses in the North East, across the UK and internationally to transport larger and more specialised cargo efficiently.”
