Classical showcase returns to Newcastle Cathedral
A North East classical music ensemble is set to return to one of Newcastle’s most historic venues for a flagship winter performance.
Orchestra North East will take to the stage at Newcastle Cathedral on Saturday, February 28 at 7pm, presenting a programme spanning Romantic masterworks and lesser-known orchestral gems.
The concert marks another appearance at the city centre venue, which has become a popular setting for the orchestra and its audiences.
The evening will open with Sibelius’ Pohjola’s Daughter and Dvořák’s The Golden Spinning Wheel, two tone poems that showcase vivid storytelling and orchestral colour.
The second half will feature Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto, performed by acclaimed British pianist Martin Roscoe.
Martin, one of the UK’s most established pianists, brings a repertoire of more than 100 concertos and has performed extensively with major orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.
The concert will be conducted by Philippe Bach, who returns to lead the orchestra.
Based in Switzerland, he has held senior roles including artistic director of the Chamber Orchestra of Fribourg and chief conductor of the Berne Chamber Orchestra, and has worked with leading ensembles across Europe.
Tickets are priced at £18, with concessions available and discounted entry for students and young people. Doors open at 6.15pm.
