Gritter veteran claims national crown
A County Durham highways worker has been honoured after four decades of keeping roads safe through some of the region’s harshest winters.
Gary Lawson, 62, from Crook, has been named the first ever Gritter Driver of the Year at the national Grit and Glory awards.
The Durham County Council employee joined the authority in 1982 and has spent 40 years navigating snow and ice across the county’s road network.
Recognised for his technical knowledge and calm approach in challenging conditions, Gary has worked with equipment ranging from 1980s vehicles to modern snow blowers.
He also serves as a qualified winter maintenance assessor, training new drivers and supporting colleagues across the service.
Gary’s award highlights the wider efforts of the council’s winter maintenance team, which has clocked up more than 5000 man-hours this season operating 81 gritters and seven snow blowers to keep roads and footpaths moving safely.
Councillor Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “Gary represents the very best of our winter maintenance service and the hard work and dedication that our staff bring to their roles.
“His commitment over 40 years is remarkable and his impact on colleagues, residents, and the wider community cannot be overstated.
“I would like to congratulate Gary on this well-deserved recognition of everything he has contributed over the years.
“He embodies the resilience and enthusiasm we pride ourselves on at the council.”
