Hull firms invest in greener future
A Hull-based building services and sustainability consultancy has invested more than £600,000 in a new environmentally focused headquarters to support rapid growth and showcase its low-carbon expertise.
GW Power and sister firm C3 Group have relocated to a refurbished 5000sq ft premises on Goulton Street, just off the A63.
The six-month transformation has created a base powered by a 50.4kW solar array with 112 panels, generating more than 47,000 kWh annually, alongside battery storage and electric vehicle charging for the company’s fleet.
Heat pumps, LED lighting, upgraded insulation and energy-efficient systems have also been installed, with energy use monitored through a management platform.
The investment is expected to cut electricity costs by 75 per cent and significantly reduce carbon emissions.
Managing director Daniel Haley said: “This building gives us a superb, modern working environment for approximately 30 office-based members of the team and means we have now the space to continue growing.
“There’s no doubt it’s taken a huge amount of hard work and effort to transform what was a dated steel portal framed property into a modern and highly energy efficient head office complete with all the latest green technology.
“However, according to The UK Green Building Council, approximately 80 per cent of the buildings that will exist in 2050 are here today, so this is a superb example of what’s possible when it comes to retrofitting older properties and giving them a new and sustainable future.
“We also pride ourselves on creating and installing innovative renewable energy solutions across both public and private sector buildings, so it was important that we did it for ourselves.”
Founded in 2014, GW Power delivers renewable, mechanical and electrical solutions nationwide and has doubled turnover from £6 million to £12 million in the past year.
It is targeting £16 million within 18 months, while expanding its 46-strong team.
Daniel added: “This building is now a key part of our ambition to make GW Power into a net-zero business in the next five years.
“Although lots of businesses talk about becoming net-zero, we’re making continuous progress with our plan to achieve it and we’re confident that we can do it.
“It demonstrates that we practice what we preach and reinforces our position at the forefront of the renewables industry.”
