H. Malone & Sons sponsors NEFWA awards
A Newcastle-based mechanical and electrical contractor is celebrating its centenary year by taking centre stage at one of the North East’s most prestigious sporting events.
H. Malone & Sons has been named headline sponsor of the 46th North East Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year Awards, with the black-tie ceremony forming a key part of its ‘Challenge 100’ centenary campaign.
Founded in 1926 by Henry Malone in South Gosforth, the family-run firm has grown from a home-based operation to a major regional contractor headquartered on Gosforth Industrial Estate.
Now led by Henry’s great-grandson Weston Malone, with the fifth generation already stepping into the business, the company is marking its centenary with a year-long programme of community and charity initiatives.
Challenge 100 will see employees complete 100 fundraising activities in support of Smile For Life, spanning health, community engagement and skills sharing.
Highlights include a 100ft abseil, 100 hours off grid and a sponsored walk tracing the company’s journey from the Tyne shipyards to its current base.
Weston said: “It’s about giving something back and celebrating our heritage.
“We’re a family business, and we want people to know how important community is.”
The NEFWA Awards, held at Ramside Hall Hotel this Sunday, remain a standout date in the regional sporting calendar.
This year’s sold-out event will honour Sunderland’s Dan Ballard as Player of the Year and Katie Kitching as Women’s Player of the Year, with former Middlesbrough and Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray honoured as North East Personality of the Year.
H. Malone is also sponsoring the new Non-League Personality of the Year award, while funds raised on the night will support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and its cancer research work across the region.
The sponsorship follows the firm’s recent acquisition of Sunderland-based McNally and Thompson, bringing together workforces from both sides of the Tyne and giving this year’s awards night an added layer of regional rivalry.
Weston added: “Sponsoring an event of this magnitude, which brings together the entire region’s footballing community, is fantastic for the company.
“We are all huge football fans which makes this event even more special to us.”
