Pipeline tech fuels record growth for Harrogate firm

A North Yorkshire engineering and robotics firm has reported record growth as utilities invest in technology to repair ageing infrastructure with less disruption and lower cost.

Harrogate-based Synthotech Group increased turnover 33 per cent to £6.5 million in 2025, doubling profit year on year.

Revenues are forecast to exceed £7 million in 2026, with EBITDA up 32 per cent and net debt reduced by 62 per cent.

The company, which develops robotic systems that operate inside live pipes and underground ducts, is now recruiting 12 additional staff across engineering, management and commercial roles to support expansion.

Growth has been driven by research and development, with new systems moving from trial phase into commercial deployment across water, gas and telecommunications networks.

This broader application has reduced reliance on any single sector at a time when capital spending remains constrained.

Mark Tindley, managing director of Synthotech Group, said: “Our reinvestment in the business has increased the pace at which we can bring new systems into operational use.

“Working across water, gas and telecommunications has made the business more resilient and helped to accelerate our growth in key markets.

“Our robot technology is helping utility companies to reduce leaks, drive efficiency savings and remove the need for extensive roadworks.”

In telecoms, Synthotech is working with BT Group and Openreach on MicroBORE, a trenchless drilling system designed to install fibre beneath pavements and driveways without traditional excavation.

Developed in collaboration with BT and the University of Surrey, the system is being trialled as part of the UK’s fibre rollout and could also support electric vehicle charging infrastructure by creating discreet access routes to homes.

Meanwhile in the gas sector, the firm has developed a pumping system that allows pipeline replacement without releasing methane.

The technology has met operational standards with Cadent Gas and is aimed at supporting emissions reduction targets.

International growth is also accelerating, with overseas income rising 28 per cent in 2025, led by Australia, while expansion into the US is expected to gather pace as utilities face tighter integrity rules and emissions pressures.
