Driverless vehicle firm lands airport agreement

An autonomous transport firm has secured an aviation hub deal.

Aurrigo International is set to support ground handling work at East Midlands Airport.

Officials say the venture has the potential to “revolutionise” goods and crew movement across the site.

And they say its licence paves the way for further deals as Aurrigo International bids to “shape the future of airside automation in the UK and beyond”.

David Keene, chief executive at the Coventry-headquartered company, said: “Securing this licence is another important step in our partnership with East Midlands Airport.

“We have deliberately sought this approval to make sure we can support our partners as closely as possible, operating fully within the airport’s ground handling framework. 

“This means we can be on the ground, providing one-to-one support during the roll-out of our autonomous solutions, ensuring they are seamlessly integrated, compliant and successful from the outset.”

Lauren Turner, East Midlands Airport’s head of airfield operations, added: “We’re pleased to be working with Aurrigo on this innovative technology.

“We’re always looking at ways to work smarter and ensure our air cargo operation is safe, efficient and fit for the future.”

The contract comes after Aurrigo International last year secured £14.1 million growth support.

It also previously revealed a partnership with Teesside International Airport to trial an autonomous passenger shuttle and driverless tug.
