Spring festivals to bring Gateshead parks to life

A series of free family festivals are set to bring music, creativity and community spirit to parks across Gateshead this spring.

Gateshead Council is hosting three Spring Festivals across consecutive Saturdays in Saltwell Park, Oliver Henderson Park and Barmoor Hub during March and April.

Each event will feature live performances from local artists, hands-on workshops, family crafts, character meet and greets and small fairground rides for younger children, alongside food stalls and activities delivered by community organisations.

The celebrations begin at Saltwell Park on March 28, where a special community parade will also mark the start of the park’s 150th anniversary year.

Oliver Henderson Park follows on April 4, before Barmoor Hub hosts the final event on April 11.

All events are free to attend, offering accessible days out for families while celebrating the diversity of Gateshead’s neighbourhoods.

The programme is funded by the North East Combined Authority and North East mayor Kim McGuinness as part of the Creative Places initiative.

Councillor Angela Douglas, Gateshead Council’s cabinet member for culture, sport and tourism, said: “Spring is a time of new beginnings, and these festivals are the perfect way to bring our communities together to welcome the season.

“Our parks are at the heart of life in Gateshead, and these events celebrate the people, creativity and culture that make this borough such a special place.

“I’m especially delighted that the Saltwell Park festival will launch the celebrations for the park’s 150th anniversary year – a fantastic milestone for one of our most treasured spaces.

“I hope families from across Gateshead will come along, get involved and enjoy a brilliant day out.”
