BEIP backs 12 net-zero projects

A cross-border energy programme is backing a series of projects designed to cut carbon emissions, strengthen energy resilience and support green jobs across southern Scotland and northern England.

Twelve initiatives have been selected through the Borderlands Energy Investment Programme (BEIP) following its Call for Projects process, marking a key step in the region’s transition to net-zero.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, shortlisted projects will be developed ahead of potential delivery during the lifetime of the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.

The programme focuses on practical technologies aimed at improving community assets, housing and public buildings.

Proposed solutions include ground source heat pumps, solar carports and battery systems designed to reduce energy costs and improve reliability.

Other initiatives include flexible energy storage, hydrogen production and modular low-carbon energy systems, addressing challenges faced by rural areas such as fuel poverty and grid limitations.

Rick O’Farrell, Borderlands inclusive growth director, said: “Through the Borderlands Energy Investment Programme, we’re supporting projects that will deliver secure, affordable, and sustainable energy for residents and businesses.

“The selected projects will help reduce carbon emissions, boost local economies, and build the skills needed for the future.

“By developing scalable solutions tailored to the unique needs of rural areas, we're creating lasting benefits for the communities across the region.”
