Restoration project revives Shotley Grove wetlands

A North East environmental charity has completed a restoration programme designed to improve biodiversity and public access at a local wetland site.

Tyne Rivers Trust has delivered a series of environmental improvements at Shotley Grove as part of its ongoing Reviving Shotley Grove project, working alongside volunteers, local residents, the Derwent Angling Association and the Community Foundation North East.

One of the key developments has been the installation of a fish pass at the Shotley Grove weir, removing a major barrier that had previously prevented migrating salmon from travelling upstream.

The structure uses a series of raised pools to help fish rest while navigating the incline.

Access to the surrounding wetland has also been significantly improved.

A newly constructed boardwalk now allows visitors to explore deeper sections of the site and take part in educational activities such as pond dipping.

Volunteers have also carried out sediment removal work to improve water quality and encourage biodiversity, while helping the wetland maintain its natural flood control and filtration functions.

New interpretation signage has been installed across the site to highlight local wildlife including salmon, trout, lampreys and bird species such as grey wagtails and herons.

School visits have also been organised to help young people learn more about the importance of protecting local river environments.

Jenny Dowden, volunteer coordinator at Tyne Rivers Trust, said: “This project provides a healthier local environment, better access to nature, and learning opportunities for children.

“And it couldn’t have been done without the commitment of our volunteers and partners, and funding from the Community Foundation North East.”
