Funding boost to revive historic Stockport building

A historic building in Stockport is set to be brought back into use following a funding boost to support its redevelopment.

The long-vacant property at 45-47 Great Underbank, which has stood unused for more than a decade, is being transformed through a collaboration between public and private sector partners.

Stockport-based architectural practice Kelsall Architects is spearheading the project, which focuses on redeveloping the site within a conservation area while retaining key heritage features.

The scheme has secured six-figure backing from the National Lottery Heritage Fund alongside financing from specialist property lender VM Finance.

Construction work is now underway after contractor Restoration Projects was appointed and began work on site.

Plans include a full refurbishment of the existing building, the installation of new glazing and the creation of a new frontage, while preserving historic elements wherever possible.

Paul Kelsall, director at Kelsall Architects, said: “Repurposing historic buildings is very complex.

“It’s great that we’re finally underway with delivering our vision to transform a beautiful and under-utilised asset on our doorstep.

“As everyone knows, viability is an issue across the built environment, so we’re grateful to be able to access investment through multiple channels in order to bring the scheme forward.”

Andrew Evans, chief executive at VM Finance, added: “Paul and his team demonstrated a strong track record and direct experience.

“When combined with his team’s enthusiasm, it made it a sound investment prospect.

“This project is the latest in a long line of schemes we’ve supported in Greater Manchester, and it’s set to be a leading, high-quality development.

The redevelopment is expected to complete in summer 2026 and forms part of wider efforts to revitalise historic areas of Stockport town centre.
