Exhibition celebrates women in sport
A new photography exhibition in County Durham is celebrating the strength, determination and diversity of women taking part in sport and physical activity across the region.
Durham County Council has unveiled the she thrives exhibition at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, showcasing powerful images of women participating in sport in everyday settings.
Commissioned by the council and created by professional photographer Lee Dobson, the exhibition is the result of a year-long project documenting women being active in the places where they live, work and relax.
The photographs capture moments from coastal routes and rural roads to skateparks, swimming pools and community sports fields.
The exhibition forms part of the council’s wider she thrives campaign running throughout March, which aims to highlight the positive role physical activity can play in women’s health and wellbeing.
Alongside the exhibition, a programme of free events and taster sessions is being delivered in partnership with local clubs and national sporting organisations.
Activities include roller derby, rowing, football, golf, Pilates, swimming and indoor cycling.
Residents can also access a free seven-day leisure pass during the campaign, allowing them to try facilities such as gyms, pools and fitness classes at leisure centres across the county.
Councillor Howard Brown, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for adult and health services, said: “This fantastic exhibition hopes to honour women who keep showing up, are strong in their own way, active on their own terms, and who thrive in the face of whatever is coming their way next.
“We hope the images can inspire more women to find their space to move and push forward, and most importantly, thrive.”
