Getting to know... Martin Crammond
In the latest instalment of Bdaily’s Getting to know... feature, which looks at the person behind the business profile, Martin Crammond, director at North Shields-based health and safety training firm Carney Consultancy, talks about following in his father's footsteps, the pride he takes in how his career has developed and the importance of reliability...
Did you always want to work in the construction sector?
Yes. From a young age, I was always around construction — my dad is a joiner and I followed in his footsteps.
It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?
The best bit is seeing something tangible come together from the ground up.
In construction, you can literally step back at the end of the day and see the progress that’s been made.
I also enjoy seeing the team develop their own skills day by day.
The teamwork is another great aspect. Everyone relies on each other, which creates a real sense of camaraderie.
The downside is the unpredictability.
Weather, delays or last-minute changes can easily throw plans off, so you have to stay flexible.
It can also be physically and mentally demanding at times, but that’s all part of the job.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
My biggest achievement is how far I’ve developed in my career.
I left school as soon as possible to follow in my dad’s footsteps, and started by learning the basics of the industry.
Over time, I worked my way up by staying reliable, improving my skills and taking on more responsibility.
Looking back at where I started and where I am now, that progress is something I’m really proud of.
How do you relax outside of work?
I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether that’s going for a run, walking with my wife, daughter and our dog Charlie, playing golf or riding my motorbikes.
What makes the North East such a great place to live and work?
The people; they’re hardworking, passionate and incredibly friendly.
There aren’t many places where you’ll find such a strong sense of community.
Tell us something about you we didn’t know…
I’m big on routine and reliability.
I like being someone others can depend on, whether that’s at work or in my personal life.
If I say I’ll do something, I’ll make sure it gets done.
