College set to bloom at Chelsea Flower Show
A North East further education college is preparing to showcase its horticultural talent at one of the world’s most prestigious gardening events.
East Durham College has been selected to exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with 12 floristry students from Levels 1, 2 and 3 set to represent the institution at the internationally renowned event.
Based at the college’s Houghall Campus in Durham, the team will design, install and present a floral showcase highlighting their creativity, technical ability and innovation on the global stage.
The group will attend alongside staff as they prepare their installation for visitors and industry figures attending the show.
In the run-up to the event, the students will receive mentoring and masterclass support from celebrated floral designer Simon Lycett, whose career includes work on royal and high-profile national occasions.
The show will also mark a personal milestone for student Nikki Wright, who has been accepted into the Floral Creation category for Florist of the Year with her own independent design.
Allan Raby, floristry lecturer at East Durham College, said: “As the only college selected this year, we are proud to represent both the education sector and the region at an event synonymous with innovation, artistry, and horticultural excellence.
“Having the opportunity to exhibit at such a prestigious event, and to be supported by Simon Lycett, is transformative for our students and gives them the confidence, credibility, and invaluable experience at the very highest level of the industry.
“This is more than a display – it’s a launchpad for future careers.”
Participation in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show places East Durham College among leading designers and horticultural institutions from across the UK and beyond.
The opportunity highlights the strength of the college’s floristry teaching and the growing reputation of its land-based education at the Houghall Campus.
Scott Bullock, principal and chief executive of East Durham College, added: “Participation in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show represents national recognition of the quality, ambition and industry relevance of the College’s floristry curriculum.
“It highlights the strength of land-based education in County Durham and places the region firmly on the map for creative and horticultural excellence.
“This success reflects our wider strategy for growth – investing in specialist provision, strengthening employer partnerships and opportunities, and ensuring our students can compete, and succeed, on a national stage.”
