Redrow breaks ground on new Huntington scheme
A housebuilder has begun construction on the first homes at a large-scale garden village development set to reshape part of York over the next decade.
Redrow has started work on the first phase of properties at Monks Cross Village Gardens in Huntington, part of a wider 164-acre garden village scheme at Monks Cross.
The development will eventually deliver 970 homes alongside community facilities including a primary school, sports pitches, a shop and a country park.
Redrow, part of a consortium delivering the wider project, is building the first 314 homes on the northern section of the site.
The homes will include a mix of two, three, four and five-bedroom properties from the developer’s Heritage Collection, with the first expected to go on sale this summer.
Bosses have said that 30 per cent of the homes will be designated as affordable housing, while five per cent will be available for self and custom build.
Steve Jackson, sales director at Redrow Yorkshire, said: “True to the original garden village concept championed by Sir Ebenezer Howard, residents will enjoy green streets, tree-lined avenues, and easy access to open spaces.
“This first phase will also include landscaped public areas and walking and cycling connections that will form part of the wider masterplan.
“Monks Cross Village Gardens is located close to the village of Huntington, offering residents a selection of restaurants and cafes, as well as a community convenience store, butchers and a pharmacy.
“Both Monks Cross Shopping Park and Vangarde Retail Park are located around one mile away.
“For commuters the area enjoys excellent transport links with local bus routes into York city centre, located three miles away.
“Or for those travelling by car, York is reached via the A64 in around 10 to 15 minutes.
“With the M62 connecting to Leeds, Sheffield, Hull and Newcastle.”
The project will be delivered in phases over the next ten years.
