Cancer charity opens Hull exercise hub

A Yorkshire health charity has opened a new specialist centre in Hull to help people living with cancer improve recovery and treatment outcomes through exercise-based therapy.

Yorkshire Cancer Research has launched the new Active Together hub at Cherry Tree Court, taking 6000sq ft in the refurbished city centre building to expand its pioneering programme into Hull.

Developed by researchers at Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, the initiative helps people prepare for and recover from cancer treatment through structured exercise programmes.

Nearly 3000 people across Yorkshire have already taken part in Active Together, which aims to improve survival rates and reduce the risk of cancer returning.

The charity is working with the NHS Humber Health Partnership, supporting patients diagnosed with colorectal and upper gastrointestinal cancers under the care of the Queen’s Centre for Oncology and Haematology.

Nicky Hill, head of Active Together at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “There is a growing body of global evidence that shows exercise can help to prevent cancer and improve survival.

“That’s why it’s so important the Active Together service will now be available to people with cancer in Hull, making a difference to communities in an area of Yorkshire that continues to be disproportionally impacted by cancer.

“The new Yorkshire Cancer Research Centre will provide vital support at a time when people need it most, helping them feel stronger and recover faster.

“It will also help create a community for people with cancer by bringing the opportunity to meet other people going through a similar experience.

“The goal of the charity is to make exercise treatment available to everyone with cancer, wherever they live.”

Cherry Tree Court on Ferensway recently underwent a £2.5 million refurbishment, providing modern facilities for the new centre and other tenants.

Tim Knowles, founder and managing director at FI Real Estate Management, which owns and manages Cherry Tree Court, added: “We’re incredibly pleased to be able to provide high-quality office space for a charity delivering such an important service and to support the programme’s expansion into Hull.

“Exercise is not yet widely available to people living with cancer through the NHS, so the work Yorkshire Cancer Research is doing to roll out the Active Together programme throughout the region is incredible.”
