Young carers’ voices heard across Northumberland
A North East council is shining a spotlight on the role of young carers while highlighting efforts to improve support for children balancing caring responsibilities with school life.
Northumberland County Council is marking Young Carers Action Day 2026 (March 11) by recognising the work of Carers Northumberland and celebrating the contributions of young people who help care for family members with illness, disability, mental health conditions or addiction.
Across the county, awareness sessions, assemblies and school events have been held to help pupils and teachers better understand the challenges faced by young carers.
Schools have also established young carer support groups, creating safe spaces where children can connect with others in similar situations and access additional help.
Guy Renner Thompson, cabinet member for children and young people at Northumberland County Council, said: “Young Carers Action Day is an important opportunity to recognise the incredible contribution young carers make to their families and communities.
“We are extremely proud of the young people in Northumberland who continue to speak up, influence change and support one another.
“Their work locally and nationally is helping to ensure young carers are recognised, supported and able to thrive.”
Young carers in Northumberland have also been making their voices heard at a national level, meeting Ofsted’s chief inspector Sir Martyn Oliver and supporting moves to recognise young carers within the Education Inspection Framework.
As part of this work, they have also developed a Schools Checklist for Supporting Young Carers, a practical resource created by young people to help schools identify young carers and ensure the right support is in place.
Anne-Marie Johnstone, service coordinator for Carers Northumberland’s Young Carers Service, added: “We are incredibly proud of the contribution our Young Carers have made to implement positive change both locally and nationally through the significant changes Ofsted has brought forward for young carer support in schools.
“For Young Carers Action Day 2026, we want to highlight the importance of support for young carers in education and the positive impact it can have.
“Young carers are often less likely to attend, achieve and thrive compared to their peers.
“Carers Northumberland will continue to work in partnership with schools and education providers to ensure they are well equipped to provide relevant, impactful young carer support so that young carers can thrive and reach their aspirations.”
