County Durham gears up to mark county day

A series of free cultural events will take place across County Durham this week as local organisations celebrate the county’s heritage, history and community spirit.

Durham County Council has organised a programme of family-friendly activities on Friday, March 20 to mark County Durham Day, an annual celebration honouring the region’s identity and its patron saint, Saint Cuthbert.

Libraries across the county will host displays highlighting local history books, publications by Durham authors and stories inspired by the county’s landscapes and heritage.

Many venues will also feature blue and yellow decorations reflecting the colours of the County Durham flag.

Younger visitors can take part in themed LEGO challenges at library clubs, where builders of all ages will be invited to create structures inspired by the county’s colours and landmarks.

The celebrations will extend beyond physical events, with County Durham Libraries sharing photos of displays and LEGO creations across social media.

Library mascot Blaze the Book Dragon will also feature in a countywide adventure alongside Rory from The Story.

Elsewhere, several well-known buildings, including Durham Town Hall and The Story, will be illuminated in blue and yellow to mark the occasion.

The Story will also host free spotlight tours exploring notable moments from County Durham’s past, alongside a special tour on the Battle of Britain in the North, examining both military defence and the experiences of civilians in the region.

Festivities continue on Saturday with a short talk at The Story exploring the Bradford family and their connection to the Durham Light Infantry.

Durham Cathedral will also host its annual Evensong at 6pm, following a pilgrimage from Chester-le-Street to the cathedral earlier in the day.

Councillor Andrew Husband, leader of Durham County Council, said: “County Durham Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our beautiful county.

“We want to showcase our local pride, heritage, creativity and community spirit by bringing residents together for a vibrant programme of activities.

“No matter your age, we have something for everyone at our venues this Friday.

“Whether you want to find out more about the county’s history, try your hand at creating your own blue and yellow LEGO cathedral, or enjoy a brilliant book inspired by our stunning landscape and its people, we can’t wait to share County Durham Day with you and highlight all that our county offers.”
