HBC begins work on ‘pioneering’ cancer centre
A new specialist cancer treatment centre is set to take shape in Leeds after construction work began on the redevelopment of a former office building.
HBC Construction Limited has started main works on a new cancer centre for independent cancer care provider GenesisCare.
The project will see a 36,000sq ft building at Thorpe Park redeveloped into a state-of-the-art oncology, haematology and research centre.
Once complete, it will become the largest facility in GenesisCare’s UK network of 16 centres and is expected to play a key role in expanding access to advanced cancer treatments in the North of England and Scotland.
The centre will introduce both MRI and CT guided radiotherapy, supporting adaptive radiotherapy techniques designed to tailor treatment to individual patients.
Earlier preparatory works included demolition and enabling activity ahead of the main construction phase, which will involve structural and façade changes, internal refurbishment and the installation of specialist treatment facilities.
These include two concrete bunkers for linear accelerator treatment, alongside MRI, CT and X-ray scanning equipment.
External works will also form part of the project, including landscaping and the creation of an elevated garden for patients undergoing treatment.
Lee Powell, managing director of HBC, said: “We’re proud to be delivering this pioneering oncology, haematology and research centre in Leeds following a successful two-stage tender process.
“The relationship has allowed us to understand the key priorities for GenesisCare and develop an accelerated programme for timely delivery and installation of specialist equipment.
“With the main works now underway, we’re privileged to be playing our part in enhancing cancer services across the North of England and Scotland.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to know this facility will make a real difference for patients, giving them access to the latest treatments closer to home.
“This project reflects HBC’s ongoing commitment to healthcare developments and to supporting local communities through high-quality infrastructure.”
Justin Hely, chief executive at GenesisCare, added: “GenesisCare is committed to delivering world-class care to people throughout the UK undergoing cancer treatment.
“We continue to make excellent progress at our new Centre in Leeds and are on track to bring advanced cancer care to individuals in the North of England and Scotland by the end of this year.
“We're looking forward to opening our doors and providing a wide range of diagnostic and cancer care services locally and without delay.”
The centre is set to open in December 2026.
